In my last article I was talking about how while we're all told to do this and do that to lead healthier lives, it can be hard to get good advice on HOW to incorporate 'this and that' into our lives, including eating healthy and reducing stress and I then went on to offer some tips on how to incorporate mild exercise into our lives.


Today I want to follow that up with a look at how we can reduce stress in our lives and coping with the effects of stress using meditation techniques - I'm no expert on meditation and have no medical training, but I have tried some of these things and know what works for me.


Before I move onto meditation, I want you to think about when you feel stress in your life. Is it because of work, your personal situation, a particular person or circumstance, or something else completely? Sometimes we become stressed because of our own reaction to a situation, and it can help tremendously simply by avoiding the triggering situation completely in future or reframing the situation and seeing it in a different way.


However, those aren't always possible, in which case we need to make a conscious effort to relax, and while you should be better off if you have followed my advice on taking up some form of exercise, one of the oldest ways of calming the mind leading to reduced feelings of stress is through meditation.


Meditation is usually associated with Eastern philosophies of life, with inner peace and enlightenment brought about single minded focus by concentrating in an object or idea, focus on breathing or chanting. However, it doesn't have to be this and the same benefits can also come from so-called active meditation, for example when you're swimming length after length and just get lost in the activity, losing all sense of the number of lengths you've swum, time or anything other than the here and now. This can apply to most activities from any sport - think about when athletes are 'in the zone' - to painting, reading, cooking, or even washing the car!


A simple way to start meditating is to sit or lie where you are unlikely to be disturbed, dressed comfortably and warm. Close your eyes and focus on your breathing but without trying to control it - just notice as you breathe in and then out again.


As you do this you'll find that your mind wanders to other thoughts, but each time you find your mind drifting you should focus it once more upon your breathing. The more you do this the better the results will be and if you can manage a single session of 15 minutes every day you'll soon find yourself dealing with stress far better than before - by calming you mind you also gain control.


Rather than focus on your breath, you may wish to repeat a positive affirmation to yourself to 'reprogram' you thoughts - for example repeat to yourself 'I am relaxed and confident in all situations' - just make sure you say it with feeling and it will help boost your spirits immensely and change your way of thinking.


Often these distracting thoughts will be about the stress in your life - your worries and troubles. By having less of these thoughts your body relaxes from the 'fight or flight' response that causes prolonged stress, good for our survival when we needed to be alert of predators, and good in certain situations in our lives, but no good at all when the response hinders our potential by being present all or most of the time.


By having less of these negative thoughts you should find that you have happier, more positive thoughts instead and that will have a real benefit in your outlook to life.

Morris Rosenberg states that self esteem is formulated in 3 ways (1) reflected appraisals, (2) social comparison, (3) self attribution.


Reflected appraisal comes from Mead and Cooleys’ idea that if other respect us and look up to us in some way, we are likely to have a higher self esteem than if they are degrading us.


Social comparison is the process by which we compare ourselves to others in either a positive, neutral or negative way. Poor children (as a generalisation) will often do less well at school than their wealthier classmates as the comparison of life styles may develop a negative self esteem, making it less likely that the poorer child will perform well in school and the low level of achievement will then further damage the self esteem (see below).


Self attribution is when there is a failure to observe the internal psychological processes and to instead, form an opinion of the self based on external behaviours or reactions. Bem gives us the example that a man who eats an enormous dinner could conclude “I guess I was hungrier than I thought” making a conclusion about his external experience in seeing the empty plate instead of getting in touch with his internal feelings whilst eating or after finishing the food to establish if he was full up earlier, or is now feeling over filled. Therefore a child who’s teacher tell them “You’re not very good at concentrating.” Could conclude that this outside information is the truth about their ability to concentrate and develop a low self esteem, instead of challenging the statement internally (“When am I good at concentrating? What do I concentrate really well at? Am I concentrating now?) and using his own internal conclusions to improve the self esteem and the level of concentration.


By far the most reliable means of improving one’s own self esteem is to find it from within, as relying on an outside source to verify your identity can be at times unreliable. If your self esteem comes from knowing that you are a good daughter to your parents, what will happen to that self esteem when those parents pass away? Or if your self esteem is verified by knowing that you are good at your job, do you then lose your self esteem if you lose your job?


If we must compare ourselves to others, then surely looking at what others have and we do not, is best serving us if that helps us to establish new goals for the future to helps us achieve that which others have. Comparing ourselves to those who have less than us should encourage us to feel thankful and to develop a more grateful attitude for what we have already.


The idea of challenging the labels we are given (or give to ourselves) is not a new one. All NLP techniques are really based around the idea of reframing a problem (that is “seeing it in a different and more resourceful way). Psychologist, Dr Clare Graves said “It’s not that you get rid of problems. You evolve into a person who the problem doesn’t matter to.” This implies that overcoming a problem is simply a case of changing the way in which you think about that problem, or seeing yourself in a more resourceful way. Using the techniques of NLP this change in thinking can be created at the unconscious automatic level. When a person believes that they can be and do more, they tend to feel better about themselves and therefore have a better experience in life. They achieve greater results which propels their self esteem to an even greater level.

Hypnosis is no guarantee that the mind can be reprogrammed because scientifically speaking, there is a specific frequency that the brain and its neurons must be in so that messages can be effectively placed. The theory of erotic mind control has been split up into two schools of thought. One is the belief that one can position the mind to believe that the individual is an erotic being - which exudes sexual charisma and confidence, the two C’s that is made to attract the opposite sex. The other school of thought is the arena of self belief - when one person becomes an erotic human being - a highly active individual, who becomes a highly sexual and active person. The issue here is not whether erotic mind control is fact or fiction, I would say that it is a fact in today’s life; it is all down to the power of the mind to believe.


Can we transform a person to have the mental faculties to be a highly sexual individual or one that can easily attract the opposite sex? The answer is yes. It is all down to believing in oneself and removing doubt, fear and nervousness - allowing a charismatic and confident individual to appear. For a long time, the medical industry has been using autogenics, which uses a bombardment of messages to someone who has been slipped into a highly suggestive state. These messages have a many-fold purpose, in this case medical treatment of conditions like OCD or AD/ADHD.


Affirmation (or even affirmation prayer in its most rudimentary form) is the belief of inundating someone with positive thinking through the use of auditory and constant visual stimulation. So let’s apply this school of thought to erotic mind control.
